Is it Wise to Employ Ice Cubes to Hydrate Your Greenery?

This Main Issue
Countless potted plant is lost to excessive attention; hydrating them whenever you look is often fatal. The practice to hydrate offers slower and more deliberate hydration. But, can it really function?

The Suggested Method
Place a few frozen cubes atop the potting mix. The concept is that while the ice dissolves, it gradually releases water, giving the root system a chance to absorb it and preventing overly wet conditions.

Examining the Practice
This approach works best for compact containers and plants averse to overwatering, for instance orchids. However, a great many of warmth-loving foliage plants dislike the cold. A plant's roots evolved for temperate conditions, and freezing water can stress or injure them. Room temperature is a big role in the hack's efficacy: in a warm space, the ice will dissolve very quickly, providing little advantage, whereas in a chilly spot it may stay too long, cooling the roots and reducing absorption. Always confirm ice cubes are frozen from pure, filtered water and never place them directly against plant stems or exposed roots.

Conducting a Trial
This was experimented with on a common orchid. Two cubes per week kept the roots consistently hydrated without sogginess. However, using the same trick on a ornamental foliage plant resulted in discoloration at the leaf edges, a definite sign of chill damage.

The Final Conclusion
This frozen water approach may be effective for orchids, however it proves not to be ideal for the majority of tropical-origin indoor plants and relies greatly on room conditions. As a result, this trick won't be recommended; room-temperature water poured carefully is still the most reliable technique to thoroughly water your green companions.
