Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD released video stills Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning in the area between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
