Leeds Keep The Reds at Arm's Length to Secure Hard-Fought Point at Anfield
Two unbeaten runs remained in place at Anfield, however only one team could derive genuine contentment from the result. Daniel Farke's men carried out a textbook game plan of stifling and restricting Liverpool, with the maiden scoreless draw of Arne Slot's tenure underscoring the lingering limitations within the reigning title holders' latest recovery.
Defensive Masterclass Earns Vital Result
A drab goalless stalemate, the initial in 84 matches for Liverpool, was largely attributable to the immense solidity of the excellent defensive duo Struijk and Bijol, combined with the home side's failure to unlock a compact Leeds defence. Liverpool were limited to speculative opportunities, and a sprinkling of boos could be heard around the stadium at the final signal on a laboured performance.
"If I do not use the entire group and we have a fixture list like this, I would not make changes," Daniel Farke explained. "For a player like Dominic I have to look after him. We all are aware his recent history was challenging. He is in incredible form but it's important I manage him and sometimes the head needs to prevail over the emotion."
The Hosts' Struggle in the Final Third
Arne Slot's team initially displayed more zip and precision than in previous outings, with the right wing-back influential on the flank. However, golden chances were scarce. The home side's best openings in the opening half involved forward Hugo Ekitiké.
- Following a smart one-two with Curtis Jones, the France international cut inside and drew a stop from keeper Lucas Perri at his near post.
- The Leeds' shot-stopper could not hold the effort, needing a crucial intervention from James Justin to prevent Florian Wirtz tapping in the loose ball.
- Ekitiké later raced through onto a long ball but was held by Jaka Bijol; although staying on his feet, his shouts for a penalty were waved away.
Missed Chances Prove Costly
Ekitiké's afternoon was compounded when he failed to hit the target with his clearest opening. Connecting with a pacy Frimpong delivery in the goal area, the attacker miscued a glance that hit the goalkeeper while with an open goal.
At the other end, their most notable sight of goal arrived from an Liverpool goalkeeper error. The Brazilian shot-stopper played a careless pass directly to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose first-time shot back towards goal was gathered by the recovering goalkeeper.
Turgid Final Stages
The contest deteriorated into a scrappy affair, low on quality. Dominik Szoboszlai, back from suspension, tested Perri from range. The resulting scramble resulted in Ampadu controlling the ball, awarding Liverpool a set-piece in a promising position, which Wirtz sent into the defence.
Slot introduced a three substitution to bring urgency, and moments later Virgil van Dijk went agonisingly close to heading his team in front from a set-piece, his header bouncing just wide the post.
Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had extended his scoring streak for Leeds in the closing stages, but his finish was flagged out for a marginal offside call. In the end, both sides had to accept a single of the points.
