Our New Sovereign, Our Digital Priest, Our Algorithmic Overlord – The Way AI Returns Us to the Medieval Era.
This recent season, I found myself navigating in congested traffic on the sweltering streets of Marseille. At an intersection, my friend in the front seat suggested a right turn toward a famous spot for bouillabaisse. Yet, the digital guide on my phone commanded us to continue straight. Weary and overheated, I followed the algorithm's directive. Moments later, we were stranded at a roadwork site.
A minor incident, maybe. But one that encapsulates a defining dilemma of our era, where technology permeates nearly every facet of our lives: whom do we trust more – other people and our own intuition, or the algorithm?
A Call for Intellectual Maturity and Our Modern Relapse
The influential German philosopher Immanuel Kant famously described the Enlightenment as "humanity's emergence from its self-imposed immaturity." This state, he wrote, "is the inability to use one's personal reason without direction from another." For ages, that guiding "other" for human thought was frequently the clergyman, the monarch, or the landowner – figures purporting to speak for divine will. To explain phenomena like changing seasons, people sought answers in religion. In organizing the fabric of society, from commerce to matters of the heart, faith acted as the primary guide.
“Sapere aude!” or “Dare to use your reason!”
Kant argued that humans always possessed the capacity for reason. They simply lacked the boldness to use it. With revolutions in America and France, a fresh era emerged: logic would supplant blind faith, and the human mind, liberated from authority, would become the driver of progress and a better world.
Now, two and a half centuries later, one might wonder if we are quietly regressing into a state of intellectual immaturity. An app suggesting a driving route is merely the start. AI threatens to become our new "other" – a unseen guide that influences our decisions and behaviors. We risk ceding the hard-won courage to reason for ourselves – and now, not to deities or rulers, but to lines of code.
The Swift Adoption and Hidden Risks of AI Dependence
ChatGPT debuted a mere three years ago, and yet a recent study found that an vast number of respondents had used AI in the previous six months. Whether contemplating ending a relationship or choosing a candidate, individuals are increasingly turning to algorithms for counsel. Research suggests a significant portion of user queries relate to non-work topics. Even more intriguing than our use of AI for judgment is what occurs when we let it express for us. Composition is now among the most common uses for generative AI, second only to everyday tasks. The celebrated American author Joan Didion famously said, “I write purely to discover what I am thinking.” What occurs when we stop composing? Do we cease discovering?
Alarmingly, emerging research hints the answer may be affirmative. A study conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology used brain monitoring to track the mental engagement of participants who had access to AI, Google, or no aids. Those who could use AI showed the lowest cognitive engagement and had difficulty quoting their own work. Perhaps most troubling was that over time, participants in the AI group grew increasingly reliant, pasting entire blocks of text.
“Laziness and cowardice,” Kant wrote, “are the reasons why so great a proportion of men … remain in lifelong immaturity.”
Certainly, AI's appeal lies in its convenience. It is fast, reduces effort and – importantly – offers a novel way to abdicate responsibility. In his 1941 book, Escape from Freedom, the German psychoanalyst Erich Fromm argued that the appeal of authoritarianism could be partly explained by a human tendency to surrender personal freedom in exchange for the comforting security of obedience. AI presents a modern method of surrendering the weight of having to decide for oneself.
The Black Box Problem: Trust Without Understanding
AI's greatest allure is its ability to perform tasks beyond human capability – sifting through vast datasets at unprecedented speed. Sitting in the car in Marseille, this was, after all, why I opted to trust the machine over my companion (a choice she took as an insult). With access to all the data, surely the app had superior insight – or so I thought.
The fundamental problem is that AI operates as a opaque system. It generates knowledge, but without necessarily deepening human understanding. We do not truly know the process behind its conclusions – including its creators admit this. Nor can we check its logic against clear, objective criteria. So when we heed AI's recommendation, we are not being guided by reason. We are back in the realm of belief. In dubio pro machina: when in doubt, trust the machine – that may become our future credo.
Using Without Losing: The Essential Challenge
AI can be a powerful tool for humanity in scientific pursuit. It can aid in inventing drugs, liberate us from tedious tasks, or manage administrative chores – duties that are repetitive and offer little satisfaction. This is beneficial. But Kant and his contemporaries did not champion enlightenment just so humans could assemble better furniture or have more leisure. Independent thought was not just about productivity – it was a discipline of liberty and human emancipation.
Human thought is often chaotic and fallible, but it compels us to debate, to doubt, to challenge concepts – and to acknowledge the boundaries of our own knowledge. It builds self-reliance, both individually and as a society. For Kant, the exercise of reason was never only about acquiring knowledge; it was about empowering people to become agents of their own lives, and to oppose domination. It was about creating a ethical society based on the shared principle of rational discourse, rather than unquestioning acceptance.
With all the advantages AI brings, the key question remains: how can we harness its potential of advanced capability without undermining human rationality, the cornerstone of the Enlightenment and of free societies itself? That is likely one of the defining questions of our century. It is a question we would do well not to outsource to the algorithm.
