The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a young woman containing several personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct personas, each with their own fears and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a desolate church.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers where their necks are. Flowers are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
