One of the original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner Unilever prevented the launch for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.

The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he will independently develop this new flavor within a personal series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Conflict Involving Founders and Parent Company

The recent announcement escalates the ongoing conflict between the internationally recognized dessert company with Unilever, the British packaged goods corporation which acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

Both founders maintain that the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

The Fruit Sorbet becoming a Symbol of Support

The entrepreneur stated through an Instagram video that he is creating a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions regarding naming options and potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”

This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem of solidarity with Palestinians because of its colors, that closely resemble the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Activism and Current Developments

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank.

The new product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company which originally created in 2016 for endorsing former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".

Management Shifts plus Future Intentions

The founder revealed that he plans to create other ice cream flavors that address issues which the company was silenced from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.

The announcement comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following many years with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence had been undermined after corporate moves to curb its social activism.

Previously, Mr. Cohen stated how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles which established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
