The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
