The United Kingdom Ready to Employ Frozen Russia's Funds to Finance the Ukrainian War Effort
The UK is prepared to move forward with using the full worth of immobilized Russian assets to support Ukraine's war effort, PM Sir Keir Starmer has announced.
In a collective announcement, the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany emphasized that this unified step would escalate tension on Russian President Vladimir Putin and compel the Russian Federation to engage in negotiations.
They added that the initiative would be executed in tight collaboration with the United States.
British sanctions have immobilized more than £25bn of Russian assets since the Russian government initiated its comprehensive attack against Ukraine in 2022. Yet, up to this point, money allocated to the Ukrainian government using Russia's funds had only been taken from gains and dividends accrued on them.
Sir Keir assured President Volodymyr Zelensky that the Britain, the French Republic, and the Federal Republic of Germany were united in their aim to advance efforts toward using the total worth of the immobilized Moscow's national holdings to end the war.
He noted that additional sanctions soon would apply more pressure on Russia.
This statement is subsequent to EU officials convened in Copenhagen recently to consider using seized Russia's holdings for a €140bn credit to the Ukrainian nation.
Last month, President Donald Trump encouraged G7 allies to seize or utilize immobilized Russia's funds, according to reports.
The total of frozen Russia's funds in the EU is estimated to be nearly €211bn.
Leader Zelensky calls on Britain's Sir Keir Starmer to take part in the Purl programme
Russia launched extensive aerial attacks across Ukraine on that day, causing blackouts in many areas of the capital city, Kyiv, and several other zones.
Several persons were lost their lives and a minimum of 20 people were wounded in the strike, the Ukrainian government stated.
In a post on X after the attack, Zelensky commented that the premeditated assault aimed at non-military and power facilities.
"The necessity is not just talk but decisive action - from the US, the European Union, and the seven nations - in providing anti-aircraft weapons and enforcing sanctions," he wrote.
"All penalty impositions weakens the Russian war effort," Zelensky wrote, in a different message.
Also on Friday, Zelensky stated to reporters he would press Sir Keir to join the PURL programme, under which alliance members acquire military equipment from the America to donate to Ukraine.
While praising the Britain's firm backing for Ukraine, he noted it should demonstrate clearly that it would engage in the program, as well as apply further restrictions on the Russian Federation.
