What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who are known at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the events leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
