Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to question particular calls from the chair umpire, following the practice already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
